Livefootballtickets.com can reveal that based on fairness, Liverpool would be crowned Champions League 21/22 winners. Three members of the Liverpool squad made it to the list, collecting a total of 7 yellow cards and 28 fouls across all Champions League 21/22 games.

However, four members of the Real Madrid team have obtained both yellow cards and fouls, taking the team’s total yellow cards to 13 and 40 fouls. Almost double the yellow cards of Liverpool, and an additional 12 fouls.

Livefootballtickets.com can reveal that the Champions League player that has committed the most offences this season is Youssef En-Nesyri, scoring 9.1 out of a possible 10. Although the Sevilla forward only played two games this Champions League, averaging at 42 minutes per game, he still managed to gain both a yellow and red card taking his average of red/yellow cards to 0.50 per game.

In second place is Bordeaux midfielder Josuha Guilavogui, with a score of 7.8 out of 10. Guilavogui played five games, out of which he obtained two yellows and one red card. Although fellow Bordeaux team-mate Anel Ahmedhodžić also gained a red card, he places tenth (5.4/10) as his average number of fouls per game is 1.2, compared to Guilavogui’s 2.2. Full data set attached here.

Placing third is FC Porto fullback Wendell with 7.3 out of 10. The defender has an average of 0.25 red and yellow cards per game, and an average of 1.8 fouls per game—three times more fouls than FC Porto team-mate Chancel Mbemba (sixth place, 6.3/10) with an average of 0.6 fouls per game.

Methodology

  1. Livefootballtickets.com were keen to discover which Champions League players have been the most misbehaved while playing football this season.

  2. The 72 footballers listed in the data set were sourced from Sofascore.com’s list of Champions League players that have obtained a red or yellow card in the 21/22 season.

  3. Factors including yellow cards, red cards, average number of fouls per game, games played and average minutes played per game were also obtained from Sofascore.com.

  4. In order to create a final index score out of 10, the percentrank function on Excel was used, with red cards holding a weighting of 0.5, and yellow cards 0.3.

  5. Subsequently, all data was amalgamated and ranked in descending order, thus uncovering the Champions League players that have been the most badly behaved this season.

  6. All data was obtained by Livefootballtickets.com on 9th May 2022, and is accurate as of then.
